Happy Holi!

I realized that yesterday was 2 different holidays,  St. Patrick's day and Holi.  St. Patrick's day is not really celebrated in India, where as Holi is not really celebrated in America.   I thought it would be a fun blog post to show what we did to celebrate both.
For St. Patrick's day Molly and I made a couple of crafts for preschool.  I tried to explain to her what St. Patrick's day really meant, but it's a bit difficult to do that to a 4 year old.  Most of the craft ideas revolved around leprechauns, rainbows, and clovers.  This has nothing to do with the actual holiday itself, but we had fun with it anyway.  We also happened to wear green that day, which was quite by accident now that I think about it.

Holi is a Hindu festival that is celebrated mostly in India, Nepal, and other regions around the world with a large population of Hindus.  It is known as the festival of colors or the festival of love.  The festival is usually celebrated some time in March, depending on the Hindu calendar.  It signifies the arrival of spring and the end of winter, hence all of the fun colors.  Basically everyone runs around and throws colored powder or colored water on each other.  It also signifies the battle and victory of good over evil.  I won't go into detail about which good god defeated the other evil god, but you get the point.  I just thought it would be fun to go around and throw colors at each other and get painted.  Unfortunately I had a doctor appointment that got delayed and it got too late in the day to throw colors, so we decided to have our own "painting" party at home.  We decided to paint each other the colors of the Indian flag and to throw baby powder at each other.  We had a lot of fun making a big mess!
Molly thought it was so cool that she got to paint mom and dad.

Even John got some color (aka baby powder).  He doesn't look too thrilled about it though.

So Happy Holi everyone!  Let spring begin and let winter end!!  (That is for all of you back home that are ready for the dreadful winter to go away!)  For us in India, it only means it's going to get hotter, and boy is it getting hot.  We are starting to sweat it out here!  Hopefully we will survive!
